Ouachita Technical College
Background
Ouachita Technical College is small, single-campus state college located in Malvern, Arkansas. The college serves a rural five-county area in south-central Arkansas that has above average poverty levels and below average higher education attainment.
Ouachita Technical College is committed to providing higher education opportunities for younger students right out of high school as well as non-traditional students who have been out of school for several years, and especially students with low income or who represent minority populations. The college helps students reach their educational and occupational goals by helping them receive certificates and associate degrees that enable them to be successful in the workplace or transfer to a four-year college or university. Over the last several years, the college has implemented programs that focus on improved student achievement and attainment that have helped students succeed at higher levels and in greater numbers. The college offers academic programs in both traditional classroom settings and on-line.
Achieving the Dream Goals
Ouachita Technical College’s goal is to effectively gather and analyze data that will enable them to successfully implement programs and policies that will serve to enhance student outcomes and success. The college’s preliminary agenda includes:
- Fostering a culture that values the success of each student
- Implementing a systematic model for institutional change
- Analyzing data to create a more successful developmental education program
- Working closely with area high schools to improve students’ academic preparation and college readiness
- Using data to develop programs that attract and retain students of color, particularly male students of color
Data will lead the charge to create a more effective learning community for all students. Ouachita Technical College strongly believes that a student does not have “the right to fail,” but rather “the right to succeed.”
