Phillips Community College
Background
Phillips Community College is a multi-campus system located in DeWitt, Helena, and Stuttgart, Arkansas.The college is part of The University of Arkansas system and serves the residents of eastern Arkansas situated in the Mississippi River Delta. The region has a significantly higher poverty rate compared to the state average. Fifty-seven percent of the students attending Phillips Community College receive Title IV need-based financial assistance.
Phillips Community College is committed to individual, organizational, and community development. In recent years, the college has participated in and implemented programs focusing on student success. These programs have helped academically under-prepared students succeed in their coursework and educational goals. The college’s five academic divisions: Allied Health, Arts and Sciences, Business and Information Systems, Adult and Developmental Education, and Applied Technology offer many academic majors, certifications, continuing education programs, and technology training.
Achieving the Dream Goals
Phillips Community College’s goal is to effectively use data to implement programs and policies that have an impact on student success. During their first year in the initiative, the college aims to:
- Use data to develop an early warning system for students falling behind in their courses
- Modify the Freshman Seminar to help students better acclimate to the college curriculum
- Establish a student success center
- Enhance supplemental instruction for developmental and gatekeeper courses
Data will inform, support, and enhance institutional change that will help create a more effective learning environment for all students. It is the overarching goal of the college to help all students, especially those underrepresented and under-prepared, successfully complete courses and graduate.
