The Community Colleges of the University of Hawaii System

The University of Hawaii Community College System (UHCC) comprises seven community colleges: Hawaii, Honolulu, Kapiolani, Kauai, Leeward, Maui, and Windward.  Collectively, they enroll more than 25,000 students with over 66 percent identifying themselves as Asian/Pacific Islanders, of which 21.3 percent are Native Hawaiian.

As a dynamic system of higher education offering liberal arts, science and technical education, UHCC is committed to providing more access to disadvantaged and under-represented students, particularly Native Hawaiian students. Although UHCC has been successful in increasing Native Hawaiian student enrollment with the help of some well-placed programs, it has been less successful in getting these students to complete their program with a degree or certificate. UHCC is determined to address the low success rates of Native Hawaiians pursing higher education.

Achieving the Dream Goals

UHCC’s goal is to effectively use data to create institutional change that will close achievement gaps and enhance the success rate of disadvantaged students, particularly Native Hawaiian students. During the first year of the initiative, the UHCC system plans to:

  • Develop a tool to document the percentage of students who successfully complete developmental courses and progress to credit-bearing courses
  • Track students who enroll in and successfully complete gatekeeper courses
  • Analyze student level persistence and degree completion data

Data will inform, support, and create institutional change that will enhance student learning and success. The UHCC system is committed to transformational change that will help all students, particularly the most disadvantaged.
