Roxbury Community College
Background
Roxbury Community College is a small community college located in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The college serves a diverse student population in the greater Roxbury area and surrounding communities. At Roxbury Community College, approximately sixty-three percent of the students are students of color. Seventy percent of Roxbury’s students are academically under-prepared for college and require at least one developmental course.
The college is committed to providing student centered pedagogy to help all students succeed. To reach this goal, Roxbury has implemented several programs that focus on helping students improve their academic achievement. Strategies the college has implemented to help improve students’ academic performance and increase the overall graduation rate include using learning communities and enhanced advising and counseling. Roxbury Community College offers a diverse liberal arts and vocational curriculum leading to associate degrees and certificates.
Achieving the Dream Goals
Roxbury Community College’s goal is to enhance data capacity in order to evaluate programs and policies that are implemented to help students succeed. During its first year in the initiative, the college plans to:
- Use data to review and evaluate assessment, placement, and student outcomes
- Expand and improve the developmental education program, with emphasis on math, English, the College Experience/College Survival courses, tutoring, the math lab, and the writing center
- Enhance the overall quality of teaching by continuing to promote and support the best pedagogical practices
- Fully incorporate the Achieving the Dream values into the college’s strategic planning and self-study process.
Importantly, critical data analysis will inform, support, and enhance institutional change that will help create a more effective learning environment for all students. Roxbury is committed to helping its students reach their goals.
