Bay de Noc Community College
Bay de Noc Community College (Bay College) is an open-access, two-year institution located in a rural, economically depressed area on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The college has a main campus in Escanaba and a branch campus in Iron Mountain. Bay College enrolls more than 2,300 students. More than half require at least one developmental course.
Bay College is committed to improving student retention, completion, and graduation rates. Recently, the college has implemented programs and services designed to enhance student performance, including Placement for Success, a comprehensive assessment program to evaluate the academic skills of incoming students and place them in appropriate courses; and Programming Aimed at Student Success, providing college advising and mentoring to at-risk students. Bay College offers associate degrees and certificates in the liberal arts, sciences, math, and vocational education to prepare students to transfer to a four-year college or enter the workforce.
Achieving the Dream Goals
Bay de Noc Community College's goal is to institutionalize a "culture of evidence" model that creates institutional change in order to close achievement gaps and enhance student success rates. During the first year of the initiative, the college plans to:
- Use data analysis to continuously evaluate and improve its developmental education program
- Evaluate existing student services to determine their effectiveness
- Develop a rigorous self-study process that links to the accreditation process
Data will drive the institutional decision-making that will enhance student learning. Bay College is committed to creating systematic institutional transformation that will help all students succeed.
