Background
Doña Ana Community College (DACC) is the fastest-growing community college in New Mexico and the state’s third largest degree-granting institution. Created in 1971 as a branch campus of New Mexico State University, the college’s central campus in Las Cruces is contiguous to the state university’s campus.
The college’s remarkable expansion to just over 8,000 students parallels a dramatic growth in its Hispanic enrollment (now at 64.9%). The U.S. Department of Education has designated it a Hispanic-serving institution.
Achieving the Dream Interventions
DACC found that success in developmental math is critical to student retention and chose to focus on improving outcomes for developmental math students through supplemental instruction:
In-Class Tutoring
The in-class tutors assist students with course material presented in the class. The delivery of the curriculum has been structured with lecture time and tutor time so that each student can receive help from the tutors in the class. The tutors are also available before and after class to aid the students in their studies.
Educosoft Math Software
Educosoft, multi-media software with electronic math lectures and tutorials, is now required for Pre-algebra and Algebra Skills students.
Case Managers
Case managers assist the instructor in helping students, recording grades, and contacting students who are in trouble, failing, or being withdrawn from the class due to absences or poor class work. The case managers also meet with students outside of the classroom to assist with advising, tutoring, and help with Educosoft software issues.
