Oklahoma City Community College

 

Background

 

Oklahoma City Community College is a two-year community college of nearly 20,000 students, 30 percent of whom are members of racial or ethnic minorities. At OCCC, students of color, developmental students and first-time students all have been shown to have lower graduation rates. The college is committed to working to reverse these trends through innovative programmatic changes.

 

OCCC places student success at the core of its mission. To help students succeed academically, the college has implemented several new programs and services, including new student orientation and student success classes, increased counseling for developmental students, greater on-line and Web-based instruction, and increased childcare services. The college offers courses in the liberal arts, science, math and technical education.  Students are able to earn associate degrees or certificates to transfer to a four-year college, prepare for the workforce or enhance their current job skills.

 

Achieving the Dream Goals

 

Oklahoma City Community College's goal is to use data to review and evaluate programmatic, and even more broadly, institutional effectiveness in order to help students succeed. During the first year of the initiative, the college plans to:

• Insure that data elements are identified, analyzed, and reported consistently across all the departments.
• Participate in mentoring from peer institutions in order to implement more effective policies and programs aimed at student retention
• Incorporate Achieving the Dream initiatives with evaluation and feedback into both the institution’s annual plan and its set of strategic initiatives, The Way Forward and Why it Matters.

OCCC will use data as a catalyst for institutional change that will enhance student learning and success.  OCCC is committed to helping all students work toward and achieve their goals.
