Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Profile

Background

Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, located in Orangeburg County, S.C., serves Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties, both of which are rural with above average poverty rates and majority black populations. OCtech serves over 2,500 students. Fifty-eight percent of students are black and 37 percent are white. Three-quarters are first-generation college students and 62 percent receive Pell Grants. More than half of the students who enroll at OCtech require at least one developmental course.

OCtech offers programs in liberal arts, sciences, math, and vocational education. Presently, the college is engaged in data analysis to better understand how to meet the academic and non-academic needs of their students in order to help them succeed. OCtech will continue to refine their data analysis as members of Achieving the Dream and is committed to helping all students succeed.

Achieving the Dream Goals

Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College’s goal is to effectively analyze data to in order to identify the most successful strategies to help students succeed. During the first year of the initiative, the college plans to:

  • Conduct faculty/staff focus groups as a means to gauge perceptions of obstacles to student success.
  • Conduct student focus groups as a means to gauge perceptions of obstacles to student success.
  • Conduct community focus groups as a means to gauge perceptions of obstacles to student success.
  • Make Achieving the Dream college visits to gain insight as to problems and solutions with implementing the Achieving the Dream initiative.
  • Do data collection and analysis. We will review the data, isolate priorities, develop strategies, and allocate resources.
  • Develop and maintain a campus Achieving the Dream web site (http://www.octech.edu/achievingthedream.asp)
