Technical College of the Lowcountry

Background
Technical College of the Lowcountry, located in rural Beaufort, S.C., serves the counties of Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper, S.C. The college currently enrolls over 8,500 credit and non-credit students, of which over half are students of color and/or live below the poverty line. Fifty-two percent of TCL’s students are required to take at least one developmental course.
TCL is committed to helping all students succeed. The college offers a diverse curriculum, including programs in the liberal arts, sciences, math, and vocational education. Students are able to work toward an associate degree or certificate in order to transfer to a four-year college, enter the work force, or upgrade their current skills. TCL works in collaboration with local businesses and the community to implement programs that benefit the community and the local economy.
Achieving the Dream
Technical College of the Lowcountry’s goal is to increase its capacity for sophisticated data analysis in order to implement programs and services that will help all students succeed. During the first year of the initiative, the college plans to:
- Develop a comprehensive data gathering and retrieval system that will generate reliable data that can be used to implement programs that will enhance student outcomes
- Track cohorts of students over time to identify gaps in achievement, particularly emphasizing the need to analyze data longitudinally
- Develop an orientation program for all first-time students that includes courses teaching students the skills necessary to succeed in college
TCL is determined to improve student outcomes and strongly believes that all students can succeed. The college is committed to leveraging the necessary resources to make effective change happen.
