Alvin Community College
Background
Alvin Community College is a public community college in Brazoria County, Texas, enrolling more than 4,000 students. The college provides quality post-secondary academic opportunities and occupational and technical programs for all those who can benefit from them. ACC offers varied formats and schedules, including full-and part-time programs, addressing a wide spectrum of individual needs and abilities. In addition, the college designs educational programming with the specific economic and employment needs of the community in mind, and offers career training options through partnerships with local industry, businesses, professional organizations, government, and other educational institutions.
College programs integrate communications, math, science, humanities, interpersonal skills, and reasoning. ACC seeks to provide students with opportunities to develop the skills needed to enter and succeed in college programs and enable students to make informed decisions about their educational and professional futures.
Achieving the Dream
ACC will focus on improving student success in developmental and gatekeeper courses. The college plans to:
Increase the percentage of students who begin in the lowest developmental course, successfully completing the course and persisting to the next level
Increase the percentage of students who persist through the developmental sequence to a credit-level course
Reduce the percentage of students repeating developmental courses, and close the gap between students of color and white students repeating courses
Increase the percentage of students who successfully complete gatekeeper courses
Close the gap between students of color and white students who successfully complete gatekeeper courses
To accomplish these goals, ACC will implement strategies including:
- a student success course,
- a student writing center,
- college success seminars,
- expanded tutoring services,
- enhanced staff development, and,
- a student tracking and intervention system.
