Brazosport College

 

Background

 

Brazosport College offers a broad range of courses to address diverse educational goals. The college awards the Associate of Arts, the Associate of Arts in Teaching, and the Associate of Science degrees, as well as the Associate of Applied Science degree and certificates in 18 occupational/technical fields. Beginning in fall 2005, the college was accredited as a level II institution and began offering programs leading to the Bachelor of Applied Technology degree in Industrial Management. Approximately 57 percent of entering degree-seeking students at Brazosport College participate in at least one developmental (transitional) course. Data show that only 23 percent of the students complete transitional mathematics and move on to College Algebra, and 45 percent complete transitional English and move on to Freshman English. Transitional students have lower grade point averages and higher withdrawal rates in College Algebra than non-transitional students.

 

Achieving the Dream Goals

 

Brazosport College proposes a four-year initiative designed to improve student success in the developmental (transitional) program and to strengthen the college’s systems of gathering, analyzing, and using qualitative and quantitative data to make decisions regarding the services provided and strategies employed by the college. The initiative focuses on three primary goals:

  • Provide a required Learning Frameworks course to give transitional students the tools needed to increase their chances for success, and provide faculty training on active learning strategies;
  • Improve the teaching and curriculum in transitional courses by establishing and assessing appropriate learning competencies; and
  • Improve the initial placement of students into the appropriate mathematics, reading and writing courses along with appropriate diagnostics to identify any areas of deficiencies.
