College of the Mainland

 

Background

 

College of the Mainland (COM), a comprehensive community college, is an accessible, affordable learner-centered institution dedicated to student success serving the mainland area of Galveston County. The College serves approximately 3,700 full- and part-time students. COM offers associate degrees and other college-level transfer programs to prepare students for work at senior colleges and universities. The College also provides occupational training and academies in allied health and public service careers. As a comprehensive community college, COM also offers developmental courses, adult education, and continuing education classes.

 

The College provides workforce training for the local petrochemical industry and business community and works with local economic development agencies as a valued and vital community partner striving to enrich its community and prepare its students to live and work in a diverse and global environment.

 

Achieving the Dream Goals

 

College of the Mainland is focusing on improving student success rates through improved advising and more effective developmental education. The college will:

 

  • Create a more effective and understandable student advising system
  • Assign each student a faculty advisor who will help create a complete degree plan and guide the student to appropriate courses
  • Provide consistent mentoring
  • Ensure students needing developmental classes enroll in the appropriate courses
  • Ensure faculty teaching developmental courses incorporate emotional intelligence and cultural learning theories to address diverse learning styles
  • Offer a student success course which will build awareness of college culture and critical skills to meet college-level expectations

These strategies are designed to increase engagement and preparation which will help more students successfully complete developmental education courses, successfully complete college-level courses, persist and earn degrees and certificates.
