Lone Star College System Profile

Background

The Lone Star College System (LSCS) is made up of five community colleges located in the Houston metropolitan area, enrolling nearly 50,000 students. LSCS is a publicly supported, two-year, comprehensive community college system involving diverse individuals, businesses and the community in quality education opportunities for the successful development of knowledge, skills and attitudes for a rapidly changing world.

Achieving the Dream Goals

NHMCCD’s participation in Achieving the Dream has strengthened its commitment to student success by implementing measures to:

  • Increase the percentage of students completing the developmental math, reading and writing sequences
  • Increase the percentage of students who transition from developmental courses into college-level, gatekeeper courses
  • Increase the percentage of students who successfully complete gatekeeper courses
  • Increase fall-to-fall retention/persistence rates
  • Increase completion and success rates for students color; particularly Black and Hispanic students

To further these goals, the District will:

  • Establish an early intervention program for the most at-risk students
  • Provide ongoing professional development programs for faculty and student service staff with emphasis on student success strategies
  • Develop a student success course; review current policies, practices and procedures to insure they support these goals
  • Engage the community in an advisory capacity
