San Jacinto College
Background
San Jacinto College is a comprehensive, public, two-year community college with three campuses and seven outreach centers located in East Harris County Texas (Houston area). SJC delivers accessible, affordable, high-quality post-secondary, dual credit, and early college high school education programs. The college helps students achieve their personal and professional goals, create seamless transitions to universities, and prepare to enter the job market.
SJC offers technical and academic programs leading to degrees or certificates, continuing and professional development programs, workforce training, and developmental education to prepare academically disadvantaged students for entry into college-level courses. The college provides student support services, including placement testing, career guidance, advising, financial aid, counseling and tutoring. SJC promotes the economic development of the region by providing workforce development for new and expanding businesses and industries, and retraining for displaced workers.
Achieving the Dream Goals
San Jacinto College plans to research, design and implement innovative programs to improve student outcomes. The college has identified the following priorities:
- Increase fall-to-fall retention rates
- Increase the percentage of students earning a 2.0 or higher GPA in their first semester
- Increase the percentage of students who complete developmental classes with a grade of “C” or better
- Increase overall graduation rates
- Reduce the number of students withdrawing from courses
- Increase reporting on student outcomes to the Board of Trustees
- Establish dedicated tuition revenue stream to support evidence-based student success interventions
Strategies to support these goals include developing and implementing a student success course, implementing learning communities, and investigating and implementing a Quality Enhancement Plan. In addition, SJC will investigate and implement other student success strategies as appropriate and as guided by data.
