Big Bend Community College
Background
Big Bend Community College is one of the smallest community colleges in Washington state, yet it serves a diverse population facing many barriers to higher education in a large, rural service district. The district stretches over 4,600 square miles and includes Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County. BBCC's mission is to serve the educational needs of this diverse population. As a comprehensive two-year community college, the institution works to provide a variety of educational opportunities, including courses and training for university and college transfer, occupational and technical programs, basic skills and developmental education, community and continuing education, pre-employment and customized training for local business and industry, and support services for students.
Achieving the Dream Goals
Incorporating Achieving the Dream will be an institution-wide process that coordinates all of Big Bend’s ambitions, endeavors and current programs into a comprehensive agenda to create a learning environment that produces successful outcomes and provides substantive opportunities for students and the communities served. Preliminary goals include:
- Continue retention studies to determine why students and specific subgroups of students discontinue their education
- Identify the resources and support students need to pursue their educational goals
- Assist more ABE, GED and ESL students transition into college level programs
