Elizabeth Barkley

Elizabeth Barkley has worked at Foothill College since 1977, including nine years as Dean of Fine Arts and Communications. As a faculty member at Foothill, she has taught piano, music history and literature, and music theory and composition. She is author of Music of American Cultures; co-author with Robert Hartwell of a three-volume series, Great Composers and Music Masterpieces of Western Civilization, and Crossroads: Popular Music in America. In 1989, Elizabeth was selected as a Leadership Fellow by the American Council on Education and in 1998 was named California's Higher Education Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Other awards include the Foothill-De Anza District’s Innovator of the Year in conjunction with the League for Innovation in the Community College. |

She holds a BA and MA from the University of California at Riverside and a PhD from University of California at Berkeley.
