Resources for Colleges

2006 Strategy Institute

Achieving the Dream's second annual Strategy Institute took place in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, January 29th - February 1, 2006. Nearly 400 people participated, including representatives from the 35 Achieving the Dream colleges and seven Achieving the Dream states, several foundations and partner organizations, and numerous outstanding resource people. Most participants attended sessions on strategies for increasing student success, while members of state policy teams discussed plans for advancing the Achieving the Dream policy agenda in their states.

Below are highlights from the 2006 Strategy Institute:

  • A compelling keynote address by Phillip “Uri” Treisman, Professor of Mathematics and Executive Director of the Charles A. Dana Center . Professor Treisman shared his groundbreaking work on nurturing minority students’ achievement in mathematics and left participants with a powerful message: “the fruits of our work need to be more than accidental, they need to be part of an intentional social justice agenda.”
  • A plenary session led by David Dodson, President of MDC, Inc. and Sylvia Soholt, Senior Consultant at KSA-Plus Communications addressing inequity in student achievement. This session engaged participants in exercises to explore the reasons for persistent inequities and discuss how their colleges can reduce or eliminate those inequities.
  • Highly interactive “Clinics” where participants talked in depth about key strategies and institutional practices.
