Resources for Colleges
2007 Strategy Institute
The third annual Achieving the Dream Strategy Institute took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, January 21-24, 2007. More than 670 people participated, including teams of faculty and administrators from each of the 58 Achieving the Dream colleges in nine states, as well as state policymakers, coaches and data facilitators working with the colleges, and representatives from the partner organizations and sponsoring foundations. Most participants attended sessions on strategies for increasing student success, while members of state policy teams discussed plans for advancing the Achieving the Dream policy agenda in their states.
Among the highlights of the 2007 Strategy Institute:
- An inspiring keynote address by Iris PrettyPaint (University of Montana), who spoke on “Visions of Success: Indigenous Theory of Educational Persistence,” drawing on her personal experience and research with tribal colleges. Her views on the power of “circles of relationships, visions of success, and a sense of hope” resonated with the multicultural audience.
- Several focus sessions, including: “Building a Culture of Evidence for Institutional Success: A Report on Achieving the Dream’s Progress at Round One Sites” (Tom Brock and Davis Jenkins); “Strengths-Based Approaches to Learning and Retention” (Alicia Chávez); and “Culturally Mediated Instruction: Theory and Practice” (Irving McPhail and Larry Coleman).
- Interactive clinics and workshops, many presented by experienced Achieving the Dream college teams, where participants talked in depth about key strategies and institutional practices.
- New this year: Web blogs for three sessions: “To Tell the Truth” How Far Do We Honestly Think We Can Push the Envelope” (Clifford Adelman); “Talking Straight About Structural Inequity” (Christine McPhail and Eileen Baccus); and “Civic Engagement: A Pathway to Student Success in Higher Education and Community” (Gail Robinson and Rudy Garcia).
