Achieving the Dream works at several levels to advance knowledge about improving student outcomes at community colleges. Participating colleges analyze data to guide institutional priorities and decisions, and they contribute to a multi-year, national Achieving the Dream database.

States are examining options for better collection and use of data to promote student access and success in their community colleges. The initiative has an ambitious learning agenda that includes research on promising practices and policies,

institutional change, institutional research capacity at community colleges, and related topics. And the initiative is being thoroughly evaluated by MDRC.

  • Achieving the Dream Database
Achieving the Dream's national longitudinal database tracks cohorts of first-time students (full-time and part-time) who seek degrees or certificates. Each year, participating colleges provide student record data (with unique, non-Social-Security Number identifiers) on new cohorts of entering students as well as data on prior year cohorts.

  • Data Notes
Data Notes, written by JBL Associates, is a monthly newsletter that presents data from the national Achieving the Dream database.  Each issue focuses on a topic related to student outcomes at the Achieving the Dream colleges.

  • Research Publications
This section of the Web site includes Achieving the Dream publications, Achieving the Dream policy briefs, the State Policy Audit, ongoing research and related research reports.

  • Evaluation of Achieving the Dream
Throughout the initiative, policymakers, funders, community college officials, educators, researchers, and media representatives will want to know what is being learned. Lumina Foundation is contracting with MDRC to conduct a multi-year evaluation of the initiative.
