Achieving the Dream, Inc., a national nonprofit that helps 3.5 million community college students stay in school and earn a college certificate or degree, announced that 23 additional Achieving the Dream Institutions have earned Leader College distinction. These emerging leaders join the ranks of now 52 institutions that have achieved Leader College status by raising persistence and graduation rates, closing achievement gaps, and changing lives.

We are proud to congratulate Mott Community College, Southwest Texas Junior College, and Valencia Community College for being named three of the ten finalists for The Aspen Prize by the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program. These three Achieving the Dream Institutions are recognized for their extraordinary efforts and demonstrable improvements in student outcomes, and now enter the last stage of the competition for the $1 million prize.

Yesterday, Achieving the Dream, Inc. – a national nonprofit dedicated to helping more community college students, particularly low-income students and students of color, stay in school and earn a college certificate or degree – opened the doors to its new headquarters in the greater Washington, D.C. area and welcomed five new staff members.

Scaling promising student success interventions is a significant challenge for community colleges, and Achieving the Dream community colleges are tackling this challenge head-on. Today, Achieving the Dream, Inc. activated its national network of 160 community colleges and institutions, 16 state policy teams, and more than 100 advisers and coaches to discuss the scaling strategies featured in a new publication written in partnership with Public Agenda.

Engaging adjunct faculty in student success reform is a significant challenge for community colleges, and Achieving the Dream – a national nonprofit dedicated to helping community college students succeed – is addressing this challenge head-on. Yesterday, Achieving the Dream released a new publication and hosted a national workshop offering community colleges timely, tangible tips for sharpening their focus on faculty engagement.

Signifying a strong commitment to student success and completion, thirty community colleges, including the entire Los Angeles District, have joined Achieving the Dream. This is the largest cohort in Achieving the Dream history, and these colleges will begin work immediately to identify strategies for improving student success, closing achievement gaps, and increasing retention, persistence, and completion rates.

Achieving the Dream named Mrs. Diane Bastian and Representative Joaquin Castro to the Board of Directors. Bastian – a successful entrepreneur and community college graduate, and Castro – a Harvard-trained lawyer and elected official for the state of Texas, will enrich the capacity of the Board to counsel and guide Achieving the Dream in the years ahead.

Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count and Lumina Foundation for Education this evening announced that El Paso Community College (EPCC) has been honored with the third annual Leah Meyer Austin Institutional Student Success Leadership Award. EPCC received the award during the opening of the annual Achieving the Dream Strategy Institute in Indianapolis, IN.

Using data - concrete evidence on student performance - to improve college programs and services is a founding principle of Achieving the Dream. Since the launch seven years ago, Achieving the Dream has consistently emphasized with colleges the importance of allowing data to stimulate reflection and discussion, and to advance decisions in the quest for better student success outcomes. That is the ATD way, and we hold ourselves to that same standard.
