Open Educational Resources (OER) Congressional Briefing

September 7, 2017

Capital Visitors Center, Room SVC 201-00
Washington, DC

Join us for a Congressional briefing at the Capitol Visitors Center in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, September 7, 2017, from 3:00 - 4:30 PM. The briefing will provide Congressional members and staff with insight into ATD's Open Educational Resources (OER) Degree Initiative.

Launched in March 2016, the OER initiative is $12.5 million dollar effort helping 38 community colleges in 13 states eliminate the financial burden textbooks place on many students and promote improvements in curriculum and pedagogy by creating degree programs that use only OER. These resources are materials that are free of charge and also come with open licenses, allowing both instructors and students to adapt and share the resources to better meet local educational needs. Eliminating textbook costs often means the difference for students between dropping a course, dropping out or staying on track to complete a degree. While the most commonly-cited goal of OER use has been to improve college affordability, a growing body of research points to additional benefits for students.

The briefing will host presidents from ATD Network colleges Odessa College (TX) and Bunker Hill Community College (MA) who will share details about their efforts to develop OER degrees and the power of OER on their campuses. The briefing is timely as Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) will be re-introducing in September his legislation to provide grants to colleges to develop open textbooks. The benefit of OER is also an issue that may be explored in the Higher Education Act (HEA) reauthorization discussion particularly as members look at ways to control the increasing costs  of higher education for students.

All attendees must register in advance.
