Texas Peer Coaching Initiative

The Challenge
With nearly half of all higher education students enrolled at community colleges, America cannot close its skills gap without a concerted effort to increase community college persistence, retention, and completion through effective student success strategies. Many community colleges are on this path and have developed and implemented successful student success initiatives that have proven to raise student achievement. Though these colleges are making great progress, it is difficult to spread these effective practices to other community colleges so that more students can benefit from these interventions and so our nation can reach our education and workforce goals.

The Solution
Achieving the Dream supports community colleges so that more, and eventually all will have the capacity and commitment to use student outcome data to improve their teaching, advising, and support for students. Achieving the Dream currently has 11 Leader Colleges and over 20 institutions statewide in Texas. Leader Colleges have already demonstrated commitment to and progress on the four principles of Achieving the Dream and have shown an increase in student achievement, and are therefore poised to assist other institutions in the student success movement. Through the generous support of the TG Public Benefit Grant Program, Achieving the Dream has awarded grants of up to $10,000 to Texas Leader Colleges to partner with other Texas colleges to spread the reach of effective practices throughout the state. Lessons learned from these colleges will inform the development of an Achieving the Dream peer coaching framework for college-to-college coaching that will advance the student success movement in Texas and across the nation.
