ESL-to-Credit Transition support

The ABE/ESL-to-College initiative is intended to assist advanced-level non-credit ABE/ESL students in transitioning successfully to college-level degree and certificate programs. The intervention consists of several related components. The first is the development of classes.  Career-pathway bridge classes provide students with an overview of employment options, available educational credentials, and the culture and expectations of the student's career-area of interest. These bridge classes currently serve career pathways in business and in healthcare. Jumpstart to college classes allow students to complete pre-college work without charge, then apply for a scholarship to complete college English.  The intervention's second component is one-to-one advising. The goal here is to link students with a faculty advisor from their area of interest to assist with transition to college-level study. Finally, the intervention calls for maintenance of a Transition Success Center (TSC). The TSC serves as the clearinghouse for the full range of services to assist the target population. These services include on-site staff advising, referrals to faculty advisors, financial aid information, educational-pathway exploration courses, and — perhaps most importantly — a single point-of-contact for inquiries about the process of transitioning. Advising and course topics include course selection and prerequisites, U.S. higher education culture, college services, and other supports.  The TSC has been brought under the umbrella of the new Working Families Center on campus.
