Student Success Centers

The Student Success Centers (SSC) are the de facto hub of student engagement at Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC).  The three SSCs (Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde) offer an environment that is not only conducive to learning, but one that welcomes students and makes them feel comfortable and willing to speak up when they require extra assistance with their coursework. Students receive tutoring, mentoring, and advising in the SSCs.

In addition to these academic services, Student Success Coordinators, who are specially selected and trained, monitor individual student attendance and performance of academically under-prepared or struggling students. Coordinators work extensively with these groups of students to provide resources and supports with the goal of increasing student success. Student Success Coordinators contact and meet with students based on an institutional “flag” system related to issues that threaten success (e.g.: attendance, mid-term grades, etc.).  In particular, students who are placed on academic or financial aid suspension are placed on Individual Academic Plans that require tutoring and regular meetings with Student Success Coordinators to monitor progress and work to remove barriers to persistence and success.  The Individual Academic Plan initiative also includes athletes and students with disabilities.  A new early alert cohort will be added for the 2016-2017 academic year.
