Math Placement Changes

TTC revised placement policies for math students in order to more accurately place students in the courses they need.  In Fall 2010, incoming TTC students had to have an SAT math score of 580 or an ACT math score of 22 to exempt the Compass Placement Test. All other students took the Compass Test and had to enter the math class the test designated, a change from previous policies that allowed students to be placed by the highest placement measure (SAT, Compass, Asset, or another measure) rather than the Compass Test.  In Fall 2011, the Compass Pre-Algebra cut-off score for MAT 101 (Beginning Algebra) increased from 39 to 55.  Students testing below 55 must enter either MAT 031 (Developmental Mathematics Basics) (0-38) or MAT 032 (Developmental Mathematics) (39-54).

Since the institution of the placement changes, the college has seen gains in student course completions among first time freshman (FTF), particularly in MAT 032 and MAT 110 (College Algebra).  The following results demonstrate the course completion changes among FTF from from Fall 2006 to Fall 2011 and the changes from Fall 2011 to Fall 2012:

  • MAT 031
    • Change from 2006-2011 = NA
    • Change from 2011-2012 = -6.8 percentage points (pp)
  • MAT 032:
    • Change from 2006-2011 = +20.5 pp
    • Change from 2011-2012 = +2.8 pp
  • MAT 101
    • Change from 2006-2011 = +3.8 pp
    • Change from 2011-2012 = +0.9 pp
  • MAT 102
    • Change from 2006-2011 = +3.9 pp
    • Change from 2011-2012 = +4.1 pp
  • MAT 110
    • Change from 2006-2011 = +19.1 pp
    • Change from 2011-2012 = +5.8 pp

Overall math success rates also have increased during the Fall 2006 to Fall 2012 time frame, as demonstrated by the following results:

  • Course completion rate change for developmental math courses = +7.1 pp
  • Course completion rate change for gateway math courses = +9.8 pp
  • Course completion rate change for College Algebra courses = +21.0 pp
