English Co-Requisite Model

West Hills College Lemoore Launches New English Co-Requisite Model

Through our college’s involvement in Achieving the Dream (ATD) we have been examining interventions for our high enrollment, low success rate classes at West Hills College Lemoore. In the past few months we have been exposed to an innovative model for corequisite English that has led to strong student success data at colleges around the country. Our English faculty have chosen this corequisite model as our intervention for English 51A. We will be piloting a corequisite model for 5 sections of English 1A and English 51A in fall 2016.

The corequisite model puts students who are in an English 51A class concurrently into an English 1A class. There will be 18 students in the English 51A class. The English 1A class will have the 18 students from English 51A and an additional  18 students who are English 1A only (36 total students). The courses are linked, scheduled back-to-back, have the same instructor, and have a dedicated Supplemental Instruction Leader who will provide additional academic support. These courses are geared for students who had a mid-level or high-level placement into English 51A and a solid record of academic success.

Here is a sample of the comments that students will receive when they register for the co-requisite model:

English 51A- Students registering for ENG 51A  will automatically be enrolled into ENG 1A  as part of an Accelerated Learning Plan designed to support a student’s successful movement throughout English classes at West Hills College Lemoore.   Benefits of this Accelerated Learning Plan include back-to-back classes with the same instructor, smaller class sizes, and a Supplemental Instruction Leader who will provide additional academic support.
