Connect for Success - Early Alert

This initiative was developed to support new students who are recent high school graduates in early start 10-week or longer courses, and enroll in at least two developmental courses or sequence of developmental courses. The initiative has been so successful that it has grown to include larger populations of students.  As part of the initiative, faculty complete progress reports for selected students at prescribed intervals. Students who are flagged as not progressing adequately are contacted by a counselor who develops success-oriented action plans with the students.

Since it began in 2011, the Early Alert program has been one of Harper’s most successful interventions and has been expanded to now include over 600 at-risk students. The persistence rates of students who are flagged by Early Alert and follow up with recommended interventions (meeting with a counselor) are consistently higher than students who do not pursue the recommended interventions. The fall 2015 to spring 2016 persistence rate for students who were flagged and met with a counselor was 25% higher than those who did not meet with a counselor. There are plans to further grow the program to add more students for the 2016-2017 academic year.
