Centralized Academic Resource Center (ARC)

Through focus groups, West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) students indicated a need for information on programs and services provided by the College. Students also voiced their concern over having to visit multiple offices, sometimes on multiple campuses, to receive help or accomplish tasks and expressed a preference for more personalized advisement and financial aid counseling. To meet these needs, WGTC planned, developed, and begun implementing an Academic Resource Center (ARC), a consolidated hub of support services for students, facilitating student engagement and networking, as well as providing individualized support according to each student’s program requirements and needs. The ARC, planned for each campus library, will permanently house academic advising, tutoring, and new student orientation breakout sessions. It will also provide meeting rooms for student organizations, study rooms equipped with SmartBoards for individuals or groups, and offices for a rotation of representatives from financial aid, admissions, disabilities services, veterans’ services, and student life.

To date, one campus has reallocated existing library space and relocated services, as well as implemented numerous changes to the new learning environment:

  • Facility redesign with the addition of an academic advising office and advising kiosk, multi-purpose lab, and meeting areas.
  • Creation of an environment more conducive to open learning, with frosted write-on windows, updated furniture layouts, and a coffee service area.
  • Relocation of Sharp Aquos Board to new lab for group meetings or tutoring with the availability of presentation, audio\video connection to other campuses or remote locations, or internet connectivity.
  • Rewiring for needed technology enhancements and connectivity, as well as upgraded computers systems and work stations, and installation of a plasma informational screen.
  • Implementation of QLess Scheduling Software System, allowing automated reservations and remote “line waiting” with text notification via Smart Phone.

Because the ARC grand opening was March 2016, usage data is sparse but will be reviewed at the end of each term. Two additional campus ARCs are planned in the upcoming year.
