Supplemental Instruction

This intervention is designed to support all developmental math students, specifically targeting underprepared and underserved students. Students, that have proven to be highly proficient in Math, are hired as Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders. These SI Leaders participate in class, assist instructors with group work and other in-class activities, and hold two group study sessions outside of class every week.

We have expanded the coverage to 8 courses and more than 80 individual classes for fall, winter, and spring semesters combined, across all four of our campuses and center locations.  About 60% of all developmental-level mathematics course sections, and about 30% of all gateway college-level mathematics course sections, have an assigned Supplemental Instruction Leader.  SI leaders receive intensive training and have regular meetings with the SI coordinator throughout the semester.

This year, the Jackson College Mathematics Department added a quantitative reasoning (QR) curriculum pathway, built upon research-based materials from the Dana Center, which complements our existing statistics and algebra curriculum pathways.  In order to oversee the creation and implementation of mandatory “lab” sessions for students in the developmental-level QR course, Jackson College hired a new SI Coordinator during the summer of 2016.  These lab sessions are supported by SI Leaders and facilitators, and are built into the schedules of students enrolled in MAT 030. These mandatory lab sessions, used as a bridge to encourage future SI session attendance for the neediest population of students, began in Fall 2016 and had nearly 70% attendance for students enrolled in the labs for the 16-17 academic year. Pass rates for MAT 030 almost tripled for students that successfully completed the MAT 030 lab.
