Restructuring Developmental English and Reading: Integration and Academic Literacy

To accelerate student progress through developmental coursework and provide, with effective scaffolding, a better (more rigorous) developmental experience, English and Reading faculty collaborated to create a new Academic Literacy discipline (ACLT), which replaces all but one of our stand-alone developmental writing courses. Our first integrated reading and writing course (ACLT 075) provides students an opportunity to move to college-level English and Reading in just one semester. Previously, it would take up to four separate courses for students to reach college level. We have also just created a new lower-level ACLT course (ACLT 074) for students most at risk of completing no credits after their first term and first year:  Those scoring 34 or below on the Accuplacer reading test.  This course will begin in winter 2016.
