Dual Enrollment and Early College Programs

Dual Enrollment Program

Bunker Hill Community College's Dual Enrollment Program enables local high school students to earn high school and college credits simultaneously while gaining familiarity with the college experience. The program also allows students to complete pre-requisite courses to some of our most selective programs while in high school, so they can start the program immediately after graduation. The College operates a dual enrollment scholarship program at the BHCC campus, as well as delivery of dual enrollment courses onsite at partner high schools and community organizations. In 2016-17, 745 students including homeschooled students, students enrolled at 51 different local high schools, and students from local community based organizations were enrolled in dual enrollment classes. The overall success rate for these students was 85.3 percent. This compares favorably to the 2012-2013 academic year when 351 students were enrolled in dual enrollment courses with a successful course completion rate of 74.2%. Students are provided scholarships through College funding and the Commonwealth Dual Enrollment Partnership. The students are immersed in the courses on the regular College schedule at all campus locations.

Chelsea Early College Program

The College has a vibrant campus in the city of Chelsea and has forged a strong and sustained partnership with Chelsea High School. Nearly 200 Chelsea High School (CHS) students participated in dual enrollment and early college activities in the past year with 86 percent of enrolled students earning a grade of C or better in fall 2016 coursework. This year's graduates in the Early College - Dual Enrollment Program between Chelsea High School and Bunker Hill Community College, earned 1,162 college credits equaling 385 courses. Dual enrollment graduates saved on future college debt in tuition and fees, over $200,000 and $50,000 on books. On average, dual enrollment students earned 8 credits each; one student earned 27 credits...this student in effect completed one-third of an Associate's Degree before she even received her high school diploma. Within the next four years we will have students graduating with an Associate’s Degree at the same time as they graduate from Chelsea High School. Most impressive is that 60 dual enrollment students completed English 111 / College Writing I course, a required course that often acts as a prerequisite for college coursework; and 20 students of the 60 entered our country and began their educational career at CHS as an English Language Learner in our Bridge Academy.
