Presidents May Share CCSSE and SENSE Surveys with Coaches

In an effort to help Achieving the Dream data and leadership coaches further support their colleges, the Center for Community College Student Engagement has added an item to its institutional membership surveys allowing college presidents to permit the Center to share the institution’s survey results with ATD coaches. The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) is an engagement tool that provides information about effective education practices in community colleges and identifies areas in which they can improve their programs and services for students. The Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE) helps community colleges assess why some entering students achieve continue  through completion and others do not. Access to CCSSE and SENSE survey results will allow ATD coaches to create custom benchmark, mean, and frequency comparisons between ATD Network colleges.

CCSSE and SENSE reports have provided valuable insight related to areas of ATD work through the inclusion of questions that consider the whole student experience. For example, in 2017 CCSSE released the report Making Ends Meet: The Role of Community Colleges in Student Financial Health, emphasizing the financial challenges students face and encouraging institutional change that supports students’ financial health in pursuit of their academic goals. ATD shares CCSSE’s view that student financial stability is a critical component of institutional capacity improvement efforts at community colleges across the country. ATD Leader College, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is highlighted in the report for its work to improve students’ academic performance by helping them become more financially stable. NOVA, also a member of ATD’s Working Student Success Network (WSSN) initiative, provides students with a financial literacy curriculum integrated into its student development course, in-person and online resources, emergency cash assistance, and loan default prevention programs. Through WSSN, NOVA creates pathways and provides integrated services that prepare low-income students for jobs with family-sustaining wages.

With greater access to the CCSSE institutional membership form in 2017, ATD coaches will be able to attain a more holistic understanding of their college’s institutional capacity and develop a better custom, scaled implementation plan to guide student success improvements.
