John Pickelman is Chancellor Emeritus of the Lone Star College System in Texas and a Coach for Achieving the Dream. He held the position of Chancellor from March 1, 1991 until his retirement on August 31, 2007 when he joined Academic Search, Inc. as a senior consultant. As an Achieving the Dream Coach, Dr. Pickelman consults with three colleges in Indiana, Oklahoma and Virginia with a particular interest in the development and implementation of effective interventions to improve student success.
Prior to his role with Achieving the Dream, Dr. Pickelman served as the interim president of William Rainey Harper College, President of Galveston College, and held several administrative positions with the Dallas County Community College District: special assistant to the chancellor; vice president for student services; and vice president of instruction at the District’s Brookhaven College. Before his employment with Dallas, he held administrative and teaching posts at two private liberal arts colleges, Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas and William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
Dr. Pickelman was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He is former president of the Texas Association of Colleges and Universities and the Texas Association of Community Colleges. In 2007, Dr. Pickelman was recognized by Phi Theta Kappa with its Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, Albion College
Educational Background: Dr. Pickelman earned a B.A. in English from Albion College in Albion, Michigan; a M.A. in Education (Counseling) from the University of Missouri at Kansas City; and a Ph.D. of Philosophy (Educational Administration) from The University of Texas at Austin.
