Challenge and Opportunity: Rethinking the Role and Function of Developmental Education in Community College

Reviewing existing research on the impact of developmental course sequences on student success, the author argues that the modest positive effects on student achievement are often negated by the increased financial burden placed on students. Recommendations for improving the effectiveness of developmental education focus on reducing the reliance on cut scores, including allowing borderline students to enroll in college-level classes that incorporate academic supports targeted to their specific skill gaps.
