Transforming Institutional Cultures To Learning Community Environments That Increase Student Success

The buy-in of a critical mass of faculty and staff is necessary for widespread and lasting institutional change. How can we encourage faculty and staff inquiry, research, and exploration of new teaching and learning pedagogies? How can the establishment of learning communities across the curriculum, with integrated student services, promote student success? And how can we move from the implementation of a best practice to a fundamental shift in institutional policy and practice? A faculty/staff-driven approach to change, supported by a robust professional development program, helped create a more successful learning environment for students at Bunker Hill Community College. Participants will engage in a discussion on activities that promote collaborations across academic departments, and partnerships between faculty and student services staff. They will be provided with a tool that they can use to construct a similar model that could be replicated on their campus. Participants will come away with ideas for creative funding solutions.
