Make Student Debt More Manageable

More than eight million Americans are defaulting on federal student loans.  Getting the information they need about the consequences of loan default and ways to avoid it is key to helping former students repay these loans.

Achieving the Dream is participating in the recently announced Student Debt Challenge - a joint effort among the White House, the Office of Federal Student Aid, and the Department of Education.  The Challenge seeks to spread the word about federal programs that could help lower student loan payments or even have part of the loans forgiven—for free. Not enough student-loan borrowers know about the benefits of  income-driven repayment programs like Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) or public service loan forgiveness.

We encourage our Network of colleges to alert students to the special programs that would cap students' monthly federal loan payments at 10% of their paychecks and also potentially forgive part of their loans after 10 years of payments if they are working for a nonprofit or government institution. A new Toolkit released by the White House on June 24 and posted here can help your college alert students and the community to ways to make student debt more affordable and manageable.
