Aspen Invites Applications for Two Leadership Fellowships – One for Sitting Presidents and One for Aspiring Presidents

The College Excellence Program at Aspen Institute is accepting nominations and applications for the fifth cohort of aspiring community college presidents for the Rising Presidents Fellowship (formerly called the Aspen Presidents Fellowship). In addition, presidents with five or fewer cumulative years as a president are invited to apply for a new fellowship –The New Presidents Fellowship.

Over the next few years, hundreds of community college presidencies will become vacant, creating an opportunity for a new generation of diverse, transformational leaders to carry forward the student success reform work of community colleges, including those in the Achieving the Dream Reform Network. Both Fellowship programs provide the tools to accelerate institutional change tied to higher and more equitable student outcomes in learning, transfer, completion, and post-graduation employment.

Since 2016, 117 Fellows have participated in the program, with half coming from Achieving the Dream institutions. Thirty seven of the Fellows serve as presidents today.

About the New Presidents Fellowship
Aspen added the New Presidents Fellowship with the understanding that sitting presidents need actionable guidance—and support from like-minded peers—to plan and execute transformational change in real time at the institutions they lead. Twenty five exceptional leaders will be selected for the New Presidents Fellowship. They will experience two residential seminars of three to four days, in June 2020 and January 2021, and engage in campus-based activities and virtual learning in between.

Applicants should currently be the president or chancellor of a separately accredited public community or technical college or community college district and should, as of June 2020, have no more than five years of cumulative experience as a college president. The deadline to apply is October 30, 2019.

About the Rising Presidents Fellowship
The Aspen Institute will select 40 exceptional leaders for the Rising Presidents Fellowship who will experience three residential seminars of five days, in July and November 2020 and April 2021.

Applicants should be senior leaders in community colleges or other organizations who aspire to reach a community college presidency within five years of completing the fellowship in April 2021. The deadline to apply is December 31.

Aspen will select fellows with the attributes necessary to lead transformational change and who are motivated by the potential of community colleges to advance the lives of students and to grow the health and vitality of their communities. They are seeking diversity in race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, professional background, and institution type.

Nomination and application forms are available now on the Aspen New Presidents Fellowship and Rising Presidents Fellowship web pages.

Nominations of candidates for the Rising Presidents Fellowship are especially encouraged as talented up and coming leaders are often aware of their potential and readiness for a top level leadership position.
