ATD partners with NASPA on First Gen Student Survey

In late 2018, the Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPA and The Suder Foundation, released First-generation Student Success: A Landscape Analysis of Programs and Services at Four-year Institutions. This report, the first of its kind, offers insights into the first-generation identity and how institutions across the country are serving and supporting these students. Because community colleges serve a large population of first-generation students, the Center is launching another study to specifically explore students in these institutions.

A full one-third of today’s higher education students are the first in their families to attend college, and the Department of Education estimates the number of first-generation community college students to approach 50 percent. Achieving the Dream President and CEO Dr. Karen A. Stout serves on the board of the Center for First-generation Student Success, and our work with ATD Network colleges is tied closely to ensuring the success of first-generation students. In recognition of our commitment to these students, NASPA has asked ATD Network colleges to consider participation in this new study, which will help to better understand the supports and services being offered to first-generation college students at community colleges across the United States.

Many ATD Network colleges are engaged in deep work to ensure first-generation student success, and participation by Network colleges is likely to play a strong role in the project’s success. Institutions will be asked to participate in a 60-minute virtual interview, complete an online survey, and/or coordinate virtual focus groups with four to six first-generation students at their institution. Interested institutions are asked to complete an opt-in form

Please note that information collected through interviews will only be used for this report and institutions will be contacted should quotes or specific institutional examples be chosen for use. No IRB is required. We appreciate the willingness of ATD Network colleges to contribute to the collective understanding of the first-generation student experience at community colleges across the nation. The report will be released later in the year.
