Policy Change Initiative – Redesigning the Intake Process

The various student access and success initiatives that the college has implemented have shown positive impacts. However, it was observed that not all students who can and should benefit from these programs were participating. Therefore, a decision was made to redesign the intake process in a manner that would increase student participation in these programs. Thus, NOVA has implemented six major policy changes.  These policies mandate that all first-time-in-college students take placement tests, attend orientation, and meet with an academic advisor before registration. Also, if placed, these students are required to enroll in developmental courses in the first semester and enroll in a student success course within the first year. The sixth policy requires on-time registration for all students (registration before 11:59 p.m. the day before the session begins). These policy changes were implemented in Fall 2014.
