Mandatory registration in the student success course during the first semester

The student success course (ACA 090) is a three credit hour developmental level course. The developmental level was chosen to minimize the impact of the three credit hour course  on the total program hours. The course is founded in the On Course curriculum, which teaches self-management, personal responsibility, and academic skills necessary to be a successful college student. The course also introduces students to a variety of campus resources.  The student success course is a part of the First Year Experience developed in conjunction with the College's Quality Enhancement Plan for reaffirmation by SACS. Feedback from the general student population has been very positive regarding the course.

In April 2014, the College Board of Trustees approved the Student Success Course policy, resulting in the course being fully scaled to include all entering students effective Fall 2014.  The course is mandatory for all students entering DCCC with an unweighted high school GPA less than 3.0.  If a student fails to complete the course in the first semester, he or she will be registered for it in the following term.  If the course is not completed in the following term, the student will be blocked from registering for any other courses until the student success course has been completed.

In Fall 2015, 85% of students who enrolled in and successfully completed the student success course were concurrently enrolled in and successfully completed gateway English or Math courses.  For the same population of students, concurrent enrollment in all other courses resulted in a successful completion rate of 88%.
