Cooperative Work Experience

Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) is a program in which students can apply learned theory in a practical, live business setting. CWE involves on-the-job, paid or volunteer, experiences which allow for the application and development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes learned through the on-campus program.  It is available in all professional-technical curricula. When students have completed the required basic coursework, they and their Academic Advisor develop a career-related job experience program, earning college credit, and in some cases, wages.

This year KCC has worked extremely hard to connect even more intensely with industry towards our goals of significantly increasing educational attainment and workforce capacity across our community.  Work-based learning is a critical part of this and towards this end our CWE requirement, attached to all applied degrees at our college, developed two innovative off-springs through a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant the college was awarded.  Two new degree programs at the college – Computer Science and Digital Media – developed innovative internship options for students to bring work-based learning to scale.  The Computer Science program, in cooperation with our largest employer in town (Jeld-WEN) developed peer-to-peer internships where peers are trained to teach peers real life on-the-job skills in pre-engineering and manufacturing work fields. The Digital Media department, on the other hand, brought their internship idea to scale by creating virtual internships with work sites with the goal of students getting real life work-based learning experiences, related to middle class jobs, on-line.  Both these programs caught the eye of the NSF and are examples of taking the next steps in helping KCC students be successful in school and beyond graduation with middle class jobs and community economic development.
