College Success 101

In an effort to increase student retention and persistence, Renton Technical College (RTC) implemented a College Success 101 course in conjunction with a U.S. Department of Education Title III grant. In spring 2014, RTC piloted College Success in five programs that were experiencing low retention and persistence. Over the past two years, we have monitored the retention of students in these programs and compared the pre and post implementation rates of the course. For winter, spring, and fall 2013, and winter 2014 cohorts (pre-College Success), the five pilot programs had an average first and second quarter retention rate of 62.4%. For spring and fall 2014, and winter and spring 2015 cohorts (post College Success), pilot programs had an average first and second quarter retention rate of 78%, representing an increase of 16.8%. RTC’s Major Appliance and Refrigeration Repair Technology (MART) program saw an increase in retention of 30.7% following implementation of the course.

At present, 13 programs include College Success. RTC remains on track for integrating College Success into all degree programs by fall 2017.
