POC 1 – FYE / Student Life / Financial Aid / Student Success Centers


Description: Representatives from First Year Experience and Student Life will provide an overview of services and resources including activities and programs for: first time in college students; clubs, organizations, and events through the First Year Experience and the Office of Student Life; paying for college - financial aid / scholarship application process and eligibility requirements; and tutoring and supplemental instruction support.


Student Learning Outcomes:  As a result of participating in POC 1, students will be able to:

Understand the activities, resources, and events available to our first year students.
Understand the process of getting involved in student government and clubs.
Understand the leadership opportunities available to all students.
Understand how to access information about paying for college, their financial aid status and Higher One cards.
Understand how to connect with tutoring services in the Student Success Centers.


POC 2 – Career Exploration


Description: Career and Employment and Counseling staff will provide an overview of the career decision making process, as well as a demonstration of on-line career and job search tools.  In addition, students will begin to take the Focus 2 career assessment, and receive a guided overview of the features of Focus 2 as well as instructions on how to interpret their individual results.

Student Learning Outcomes: As a result of participating in Career Exploration (POC 2), students will be able to:

Complete the Focus 2 Career Assessment and learn how to use this tool to aid in their educational and career planning.
Understand the process of choosing a career pathway.
Understand how to access and use face-to-face and online Career and Employment Resources: SJC Career Connections, Optimal Resume, Do What You Are, Focus 2, CareerSpots videos, Mock Interviews, and Resume Critiquing.


POC 3 – Guided Registration


Description: Educational Planning and Counseling staff and representatives from First Year Experience offices show students how to use My SanJac GPS to create and plan their classes toward graduatin, as well as understand their major.  In addition, students will be assisted with registering for the upcoming semester.

Student Learning Outcomes: As a result of participating in Guided Registration (POC 3), students will be able to:

Understand the features of the My San Jac GPS Planner and how it relates to developing an educational plan towards completion of their academic goals at San Jacinto College.
Understand how courses fit in a degree plan.
Understand how to build a class schedule as it relates to prerequisites, course availability, and other aspects that impact the ability to register for future terms.
Understand how to access and register through the Secure Online System (SOS).
Request a major change so that a student’s major is accurate in My San Jac GPS.
