Expanding the Co-Requisite Model in Gateway Courses

This intervention was intended to speed students' progress through learning support by pairing more developmental courses with credit-bearing gateway courses in order to increase the number of students successfully completing these courses and persisting from term to term.  A team comprised of faculty from general education and technical courses with high enrollment and low success rates, the general education dean, and the tutoring center director discussed expansion of the co-requisite model to these courses:  ENGL 1010 Fundamentals of English, ENGL 1101 Composition & Rhetoric, MATH 1012 Foundations of Mathematics, MATH 1111 College Algebra, BIOL 2113 Anatomy & Physiology I, BIOL 2114 Anatomy & Physiology II, ECON 2105 Macroeconomics, and CIST 1305 Program Design & Development.

In AY2014, the team concluded that the co-requisite model is best suited to the areas of English and reading and recommended implementing more appropriate interventions in other subjects to improve student success rates. As a result of these discussions, the college saw an increase in student success efforts for each subject area.  In AY2015, the college continued to explore additional co-requisite English models to reach more students and accelerate their progress toward graduation. Technology proved to be the greatest challenge as the college was not able to fully automate the registration process; therefore, Academic Affairs will work with Student Affairs to mitigate this issue. As a result of the success seen with English and reading co-requisite courses, the college will also begin offering co-requisite math courses in AY2016.
