Revise assessment and placement practices

(2016) EMCC Liberal studies students develop an Educational Plan in the FYE course and this plan has been a useful tool in advising and goal setting with this group of students. This year, the Student Success Leadership team work with IT staff to make the Educational plan more accessible for all advisors and students on the Student Information System. Additionally, many other departments are interested in developing Educational plans with students, so scaling up this will be a priority for 2016-17.

Increased effort and attention was placed on informing and alerting faculty in all departments regarding at risk students as defined by those receiving early warnings, those on academic probation or those students who were dismissed, but allowed to return. Faculty in all departments were sent lists of students in these categories and were encouraged to reach out to these students and offer assistance and check in.


(2015) EMCC continues to use the Accuplacer as a first step to identify students requiring developmental mathematics.  New pre and post tests for Developmental math courses were developed and used in 2014-15. These were used in identifying specific gaps in knowledge and were used to keep students in their original placement or to move them up a level in the developmental sequence. The Accuplacer diagnostics was used in the summer success academy with students in order to better target specific gaps, however, the cost of using the Accuplacer diagnostics for all students in prohibitive at this time. Testing is being scheduled and administered by the Student Success Center staff which is providing a more consistent testing environment for students with advising often available immediately following taking the test. Developmental writing will be addressed in the upcoming year and pre and post writing tests will be developed to align with the writeplacer currently used for placement.



(2014) We will continue review our placement testing procedures and policy to determine: 1) if the testing process is adequate to properly diagnosis student learning needs and 2) to assess whether the placement test adequately assesses  specific skills necessary to succeed in various gateway courses required by program of study, and 3) if students are being appropriately placed in developmental courses once their individual needs have been identified.A summer success academy for incoming students  who test into developmental coursese is being held in summer 2014. Students will be tested using both Accuplacer and Accuplacer diagonstics and results will be used to develop course work to address needs and gaps in learning.


We expect to use Accuplacer diagnostics for all incoming cohort students in spring 2014. This year has been spent on planning to make the change from the current Accuplacer test. Research about the diagnostic test and training to interpret the results has and will occur in the remainder of  2013. 

A new testing and advising  center will open in late Spring 2014 as part of the new Student Success Center and area. This will improve the testing environment for students and provide professional advising by a consistent group of advisors that can interpret and place students effectively. 

Math requirement by program have been identified and shared with advising staff.  Knowing what math pathway students need will help in more accurate placement of students in both gateway and developmental math.

Developmental math courses and supplement instructional strategies to support student deficits in math as identified by the diagnostics  will be designed and developed in 2013-14.
