Students Connecting Mentors for Success

OCCC recently initiated Students Connecting Mentors for Success.  This new program was designed to match professionals in the field with students.  The purpose of the SCMS program is to improve the academic achievement, retention, and graduation rates of our students, with the goal of preparing them to transfer to a four-year university or successfully enter the workforce.  We are achieving this by providing professionals from the community who will serve as mentors and provide one-on-one supportive relationships to our students.  Mentors offer advice, insight, and guidance to mentees regarding academic and professional pursuits and general life matters.  Mentors may also connect students with industry professionals, internships, and job opportunities.  The SCMS program is for any interested full- or part-time student who is in an academic program that results in an associate’s degree or certificate of mastery.

Mentors are expected to contact mentees at least once per week and to meet in person once per month.  Mentors find out about the program in a variety of ways. Many have been recommended by OCCC faculty and staff, others have contacted OCCC to volunteer after hearing about the program.  We also actively recruit professionals who come from a variety of professions and industries, are from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds, and possess a wide range of professional experience.
