First Year Seminar

The First Year Seminar course was developed in 2013 and is taken by first time in college degree seeking students during their first semester. The course is designed to prepare students for the rigors of college level course work as well as engage them in academic and career planning.  By the end of the first semester, students have a better expectation of what it means to be a college student, and they will have created--in consultation with a counselor who is linked to the course--a four semester academic plan that serves as a pathway to completion.  The FYS course provides students with a foundation for completing the rest of their coursework in hopes of increasing persistence and completion.   During the 2015-2016 academic year, over 600 students enrolled in an FYS course (as compared to just over 100 during the 2014-2015 academic year) and the fall to spring persistence rate was slightly higher than students who did not take an FYS course.  Harper College will continue to increase enrollment in FYS courses with the hopes of enrolling all first-time in college degree seeking students by fall 2018.
