PASS advising/new student advising/orientation,

Delta College continues to find value in making as many resources as possible easily available on its web site while also increasing mandatory, in-person advising services. We have found that our students expect easy “high-tech” access to information yet need “high-touch” guidance to be successful. Building on positive experiences of previous in-person, group orientations for new students, academic advisors and counselors now meet with every new First Time in Any College (FTIAC) student for an individual orientation utilizing the holistic considerations of Appreciative Advising. This program, called PASS—Planning for Academic Student Success—connected with 1,684 students in preparation for their first semester starting Fall 2015. One preliminary indicator of student success from this program shows that we realized a 50% decline in the number of FTIAC students placed on Academic Caution after their first semester. Even more dramatically, we saw an 85% decline in the number of students placed on Academic Probation.

In Fall 2014 1688 FTIAC students found enrolled in classes at Delta College were all required to complete mandatory online orientation.  In Fall 2015 1684 FTIAC students found enrolled in classes at Delta College were all required to complete PASS advising.  Students who have experienced mandatory face to face orientation and advising have higher first term grade point averages and return the next semester at higher rates.
