Learning Environment Adaptability Project (LEAP)

McLennan Community College embarked on a five year initiative titled Learning Environment Adaptability Project in 2012 to address first time in college students' Emotional Intelligence.  The project's goal is to help students become more self aware and self motivated, providing them necessary resources, and coaching to learn skills of adaptability  in order to be successful in the college experience and beyond.  The initiative addresses the student's first year experience through interventions with a focused orientation, a first semester Learning Frameworks courses, and Emotional Intelligence modules in Gateway courses. This also includes professional development of faculty and staff on Emotional Intelligence skills and how they in turn can help students towards their success.  Other aspects include an early alert system and success coaches to address student needs throughout the semester.  The whole process is managed through data collection process that informs each step of the process.

As of the end of Spring 2016, Over 50 gateway faculty have been trained in EI and have developed EI modules in their curriculum. The Learning Frameworks course is required for all first time in college students.   An increasing number of faculty have taken advantage of professional development for certification in Emotional Intelligence which will allow them to teach Learning Frameworks. As a result, there have been discipline-specific LF courses developed for Engineering majors, Honors College students, Visual and Performing Arts majors.  A section has also been developed for Men of Color that corresponds to a MOC Mentoring Program.
