Studio Design Instructional Space


The studio environment continues to grow across campus. The HSI STEM grant funded 2 additional labs in 2016 for use by STEM faculty. It is becoming the instructional space model of choice at Lee College.

The studio environment continues to gain traction as the learning enviroment of choice among many science and math faculty members. Success rates are markedly higher for the sections that are taught by instructors using this model. Space is limited for studio classrooms and the cost prohibits wide spread scaling currently.  Studio classrooms are currently being used in Biology, Physics, Kinesiology, Math and Developmental Math.


The studio teaching environment and the investment of equipment and real estate involved in the transformation, was expanded based on student success data gathered from a gatekeeper course pilot in the sciences. The studio classroom pedagogy was scaled into multiple sciences, kinesiology, math, and developmental education courses.

Science Faculty piloted a studio learning environment beginning in the Spring of 2011. Students in a Biology 1406 course employing this pedagogy, experienced success at a higher rate that students in a traditional classroom.  One instructor scaled the pedagogy across all courses justified by a pre-implementation success rate of 60.4% (Fall 2010) increasing steadily to a success rate of 87.9% in the Spring of 2014.  The studio teaching environment has now been scaled to include kinesiology, physics, and developmental education courses. More expansion is expected as funds permit classroom spaces to be redesigned.

Collaborative pedagogy for a Studio Design instructional space to engage primarily non-biology majors in Biology 1406 General Biology for mastery of student learning outcomes and higher successful completion.

2013: Pedagogy expanded to include Math, Developmental math, Biology II, Physics, Kinesiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Micro-Biology.
